Why is the church called the bride of Christ?

The church is called the bride of Christ to illustrate the deep covenantal relationship between Jesus and His people. This imagery emphasizes love, intimacy, faithfulness, and union. Just as a husband and wife become one flesh, Christ and the church are united in spirit and purpose through a holy and eternal bond.

Paul describes this mystery in Ephesians:

“For we are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones. ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife…’ This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church.”
(Ephesians 5:30–32)

Human marriage is patterned after the greater spiritual reality of Christ’s relationship with the church. He loved the church, gave Himself for her, sanctifies her, and will one day present her to Himself in glory:

“That He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing…”
(Ephesians 5:27)

This is not a passive role for the church. Believers are to be pure, devoted, and eagerly awaiting His return, just like a bride prepared for her groom.

John saw this image fulfilled in Revelation:

“Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready.”
(Revelation 19:7)

The culmination of this union will be the marriage supper of the Lamb, a celebration of eternal communion between Christ and His redeemed people.

The title “bride of Christ” also conveys exclusivity and loyalty. Just as a bride belongs to her husband alone, the church is to remain faithful to Christ, rejecting all spiritual adultery.

“For I have betrothed you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ.”
(2 Corinthians 11:2)

The church is not merely a gathering of people. She is a living, loved, and prepared bride, purchased by His blood and destined for eternal union with her Lord.
