Why is Satan called the god of this world?

Satan is called the god of this world because he holds temporary influence over the systems, values, and spiritual blindness of unbelievers. This title does not mean he is divine or equal with God, but that many in the world follow him and are under his deception and control. It speaks to the depth of corruption in the world system opposed to God.

Paul writes:

“Whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ… should shine on them.”
(2 Corinthians 4:4)

This blindness is not merely intellectual, it is spiritual. Satan uses lies, pride, materialism, and sin to keep people from seeing the truth of Christ. Jesus said of the devil:

“When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.”
(John 8:44)

The phrase “god of this world” (or “age”) points to the present world system under sin. Satan tempted Jesus with “all the kingdoms of the world” (Matthew 4:8–9), claiming they were his to give. Jesus did not dispute this, showing Satan’s current influence is real, though limited and temporary.

John affirmed this reality:

“We know that we are of God, and the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one.”
(1 John 5:19)

However, Satan’s role as “god of this world” is permitted by God for a time. He is still subject to divine authority. His reign is destined to end when Christ returns:

“The ruler of this world will be cast out.”
(John 12:31)

Those in Christ are no longer under Satan’s dominion:

“He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love.”
(Colossians 1:13)

Satan may be the god of this age, but he is already defeated. Believers are called to resist him, walk in the light, and proclaim the gospel that breaks spiritual blindness.
