God says that He wounds and heals to affirm His absolute authority over both judgment and restoration. He is not limited to blessing alone, nor is He unjust in bringing discipline. His power extends over every aspect of life and His actions are always righteous.
“Now see that I, even I, am He, and there is no God besides Me; I kill and I make alive; I wound and I heal; nor is there any who can deliver from My hand.” (Deuteronomy 32:39)
This declaration is part of Moses’ song, emphasizing that God alone governs life, death, suffering, and recovery. There is no other power or god who can override His will or save apart from Him. His judgment is not arbitrary, and His healing is not uncertain.
When God wounds, it is often as a result of sin and rebellion. But even then, His goal is not destruction, but repentance and restoration. His healing reflects His mercy and faithfulness to His covenant.
This verse affirms both God’s justice and His grace. He disciplines to correct, and He restores to bless. It removes any illusion that other gods or human strength can provide safety or healing. Everything is ultimately under His hand.
