Stephen’s face shone like an angel’s as a visible sign of God’s presence and approval, even as he stood on trial for his faith. This event is described in Acts 6:15:
“And all who sat in the council, looking steadfastly at him, saw his face as the face of an angel.” (Acts 6:15)
Stephen had been falsely accused of blasphemy and brought before the Sanhedrin. Despite the hostility of his accusers, he remained calm and full of the Holy Spirit (Acts 6:5). His radiant face reflected a supernatural peace and glory that comes from intimate fellowship with God, similar to Moses’ shining face after meeting with the Lord (Exodus 34:29).
This visible glow testified that Stephen’s words and character were aligned with God’s truth. It also foreshadowed his impending martyrdom, showing that God was sustaining him with divine strength. Rather than showing fear, Stephen radiated confidence and serenity, confirming that his hope was anchored in Christ.
The phrase “like an angel” signifies purity, fearlessness, and a heavenly demeanor. Stephen was about to deliver a bold defense of the gospel and confront the leaders for resisting the Holy Spirit (Acts 7:51). His glowing face affirmed that his message came from God.
Stephen’s shining face teaches that when believers are filled with the Spirit and steadfast in faith, their countenance reflects God’s presence. It reminds us that the glory of God is most evident in moments of trial and that His peace can prevail even in the face of persecution.
