Moses invited Hobab, his brother-in-law, to travel with Israel because Hobab was familiar with the wilderness and could be a guide for the people. Though Israel was led by the cloud of the Lord, Moses recognized the practical wisdom and experience Hobab could provide in navigating the terrain. This invitation showed the value of both divine guidance and human help working together.
“So Moses said to Hobab the son of Reuel the Midianite, Moses’ father-in-law: ‘We are setting out for the place of which the Lord said, “I will give it to you.” Come with us, and we will treat you well; for the Lord has promised good things to Israel.’” (Numbers 10:29)
By asking Hobab to join, Moses demons/”>demonstrated humility, acknowledging the benefit of Hobab’s knowledge. At the same time, he assured Hobab that blessing would come from being with God’s people. This moment highlighted that while Israel depended fully on the Lord for direction, God also used human relationships and skills for the good of His people.
