Why did Jesus appear first to women?

Jesus appeared first to women after His resurrection to honor their faithfulness, to overturn cultural norms, and to make clear that the gospel is entrusted to those who believe, not merely to those with public status or religious authority. This decision was deliberate and consistent with Jesus’ ministry, which consistently elevated the lowly and faithful.

Mark 16:9 records the first appearance:

“Now when He rose early on the first day of the week, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom He had cast seven demons.”

Mary Magdalene, who had been delivered from demonic oppression, was the first to see the risen Lord. She had remained near the cross when many others had fled, and she came to the tomb early in the morning while it was still dark (John 20:1).

John 20:14–16 describes her encounter with Jesus:

“Now when she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, ‘Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?’… Jesus said to her, ‘Mary!’ She turned and said to Him, ‘Rabboni!’ (which is to say, Teacher).”

This personal revelation (Jesus calling her by name) demonstrated that He knew and valued her. He then gave her a mission:

“Jesus said to her, ‘Go to My brethren and say to them, “I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.”’”
(John 20:17)

This made her the first witness of the resurrection and the first to carry the message to the disciples. This was remarkable in a culture where a woman’s testimony was often disregarded in legal or religious matters.

The angel at the tomb had already spoken to the women with a commission:

“Go quickly and tell His disciples that He is risen from the dead…”
(Matthew 28:7)

Jesus Himself later appeared to the other women as they ran to share the news:

“And as they went to tell His disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, ‘Rejoice!’ So they came and held Him by the feet and worshiped Him.”
(Matthew 28:9)

These women were not apostles, but their faith and devotion were rewarded. Jesus did not choose the high priest, Pilate, or even Peter to be the first witness. He chose women who had stayed near Him in death and were first to seek Him in resurrection.

By doing this, Jesus displayed that His kingdom does not operate by worldly status but by humble faith and obedience. The resurrection message began in the mouths of those least expected by men but fully approved by God.
