Why did Adam and Eve hide after they sinned?

Genesis 3:7–8 records their immediate reaction:

“Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings. And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.”

They hid because sin brought guilt, shame, and fear. Before their disobedience, they lived in innocence and perfect fellowship with God. After eating from the tree, their eyes were opened, not to wisdom as the serpent promised, but to the devastating reality of sin. Their nakedness now symbolized vulnerability and guilt. In an attempt to cover themselves, they used fig leaves, but this could not remove their shame.

Hiding from God also reveals a broken relationship. Once they walked freely with Him; now they avoided His presence. This is the effect of sin: separation from God. Isaiah 59:2 states:

“But your iniquities have separated you from your God; and your sins have hidden His face from you.”

When God called out, “Where are you?” (Genesis 3:9), it was not because He lacked knowledge but because He was giving them an opportunity to confess. Instead of seeking mercy, they withdrew. Proverbs 28:13 teaches the opposite response:

“He who covers his sins will not prosper, but whoever confesses and forsakes them will have mercy.”

This passage shows that hiding from God never solves the problem of sin. Only God can provide true covering and reconciliation, which He begins to reveal later in the chapter by promising redemption through the coming Savior.
