In Revelation 5:11, John describes a vast number of angels surrounding the throne of God:
“Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne, the living creatures, and the elders; and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands.”
(Revelation 5:11)
The phrase “myriads of myriads” (or “ten thousand times ten thousand”) is a Greek expression signifying an innumerable multitude. It does not indicate a literal mathematical sum but emphasizes a number beyond human comprehension. The purpose is to convey the overwhelming magnitude of heavenly beings who worship and serve God.
This imagery underscores two important truths:
The Vastness of God’s Heavenly Host – Scripture repeatedly affirms that angels are numerous beyond counting. Daniel 7:10 uses similar language: “A thousand thousands ministered to Him; ten thousand times ten thousand stood before Him.”
The Centrality of Worship in Heaven – The countless angels join in adoration of the Lamb, saying:
“Worthy is the Lamb who was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom, and strength and honor and glory and blessing!”
(Revelation 5:12)
This shows that Jesus’ victory at the cross is celebrated universally, and all of heaven acknowledges His worthiness.
The expression “myriads of myriads” reminds believers of the grandeur and glory of the heavenly realm. It affirms that God is not only surrounded by unimaginable splendor but also Lord over all created beings, both earthly and heavenly. This vision gives hope and assurance that the Lamb who was slain reigns supreme in a universe filled with His worshippers.
