The parable of the Lost Coin, found in Luke 15:8–10, teaches about God’s relentless love for the lost and the joy in heaven when a sinner repents. Jesus tells this story as part of a trio of parables (including the Lost Sheep and the Prodigal Son) to illustrate the value God places on every soul.
“Or what woman, having ten silver coins, if she loses one coin, does not light a lamp, sweep the house, and search carefully until she finds it? And when she has found it, she calls her friends and neighbors together, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the piece which I lost!’ Likewise, I say to you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”
(Luke 15:8–10)
In this parable:
The Woman represents God’s active role in seeking the lost.
The Lost Coin symbolizes a sinner separated from God.
The Diligent Search reflects God’s persistence and care in bringing people to repentance.
Several truths emerge from this teaching:
Every Soul Is Valuable to God – The woman had nine coins remaining but did not consider the lost one insignificant. Likewise, God values each individual and desires none to perish (2 Peter 3:9).
God Actively Seeks the Lost – Just as the woman lights a lamp and searches carefully, God initiates the process of salvation through the conviction of the Spirit and the proclamation of the gospel.
Heaven Rejoices Over Repentance – The parable concludes with a picture of great celebration, emphasizing that turning to God is a cause of joy among the angels.
This parable shows the depth of God’s love and the certainty that He pursues sinners with purpose. It calls believers to share His heart for the lost and to rejoice when even one person turns to Him in repentance.
