What does the Bible say about wisdom?

Wisdom in the Bible is not merely intellectual knowledge, but the fear of the Lord applied to daily life. It is the ability to discern what is right, just, and true, and to live in obedience to God’s commands.

The foundation of biblical wisdom is found in Proverbs 9:10:

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”

God is the source of true wisdom, and He gives it to those who seek Him. James 1:5 says:

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.”

Wisdom is closely linked with righteousness. Proverbs constantly contrasts the wise with the foolish, showing that wisdom leads to life and blessing, while folly leads to ruin. Proverbs 3:13–14 declares:

“Happy is the man who finds wisdom, and the man who gains understanding; for her proceeds are better than the profits of silver, and her gain than fine gold.”

Solomon, the wisest man in the Old Testament, received his wisdom directly from God because he humbly asked for it to rule justly (1 Kings 3:9–12). His writings in Proverbs and Ecclesiastes reveal both the heights and limits of human wisdom under the sun.

However, the New Testament shows that ultimate wisdom is found in Christ. Colossians 2:3 describes Jesus:

“In whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.”

True wisdom leads a person to humble themselves before God, walk in His ways, and live with eternity in view. It is practical, moral, and spiritual, guiding decisions, relationships, and understanding.

Biblical wisdom is available to all who fear God, study His Word, and obey His will. It is more valuable than wealth, and its fruit endures forever.
