What does the Bible say about the Year of Jubilee?

The Year of Jubilee was a special year of liberty and restoration instituted by God for the nation of Israel. It occurred every fiftieth year, following seven cycles of seven years (49 years), and is described in detail in Leviticus 25:8–55.

“And you shall consecrate the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout all the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a Jubilee for you…”
(Leviticus 25:10)

Key events of the Jubilee included:

  • Release of all Hebrew slaves: Those who had sold themselves into servitude were to be set free (Leviticus 25:39–41).

  • Restoration of land: Land that had been sold due to poverty was returned to its original family (Leviticus 25:13, 23–28).

  • No sowing or reaping: The land was to rest, similar to the sabbatical year, and people were to rely on what the land naturally produced (Leviticus 25:11–12).

The Jubilee ensured that economic inequalities did not become permanent. It upheld God’s original allotment of the land and preserved the tribal structure of Israel. It also reminded the people that the land ultimately belonged to God:

“The land shall not be sold permanently, for the land is Mine; for you are strangers and sojourners with Me.”
(Leviticus 25:23)

While there is no clear biblical record of Israel ever fully observing the Jubilee, its purpose reflects God’s justice, mercy, and concern for the poor and the oppressed.

In a prophetic and spiritual sense, the Jubilee foreshadows the freedom Christ brings. Jesus alluded to Jubilee language in Luke 4:18–19 when He read from Isaiah and proclaimed:

“To proclaim liberty to the captives… to set at liberty those who are oppressed…”

This speaks to the ultimate deliverance found in Him, not just physical, but spiritual freedom and restoration.

Though the literal observance of the Year of Jubilee was part of the Mosaic Law and not required under the New Covenant, its themes of redemption, mercy, and justice continue to teach believers about God’s character and His future restoration of all things.
