What does the Bible say about the shield of faith?

The shield of faith is mentioned in Ephesians 6:16 as part of the armor of God:

“Above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.”

The Roman shield, or scutum, was large and used to protect the entire body from arrows and projectiles. Paul uses this imagery to describe faith as a defense against the attacks of Satan. The “fiery darts” symbolize temptations, lies, accusations, and fears aimed at believers.

Faith, in this context, is not a vague feeling but a solid trust in the character and promises of God. Hebrews 11:1 defines faith as:

“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”

When a believer relies on God’s Word and His faithfulness, every attempt of the enemy to instill doubt or draw them away is extinguished. Just as a shield would intercept and absorb an arrow, faith intercepts and nullifies spiritual deception and discouragement.

The use of “above all” in Ephesians 6:16 shows the prominence of faith among the spiritual defenses. Without it, the rest of the armor cannot be effectively employed, since every piece must be applied through faith in Christ and His victory.
