What does the Bible say about the seven seals?

The seven seals are described in Revelation chapters 5 through 8. In John’s vision, he saw a scroll in the right hand of Him who sat on the throne. The scroll was sealed with seven seals, and no one in heaven or on earth was found worthy to open it or look at it. John wept, but one of the elders said, “Do not weep. Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah… has prevailed to open the scroll and to loose its seven seals” (Revelation 5:5).

The Lamb, identified as Christ, took the scroll and began to open the seals, each one unleashing judgments and events that affect the earth.

  1. First Seal – A white horse appears, and its rider has a bow and a crown, going out conquering (Revelation 6:1–2).

  2. Second Seal – A red horse appears, symbolizing war, and its rider takes peace from the earth (Revelation 6:3–4).

  3. Third Seal – A black horse appears, with a rider holding scales, representing famine and economic hardship (Revelation 6:5–6).

  4. Fourth Seal – A pale horse appears, its rider named Death, and Hades follows. They are given power to kill a fourth of the earth by sword, hunger, and plague (Revelation 6:7–8).

  5. Fifth Seal – The souls of martyrs are seen under the altar, crying out for justice. They are given white robes and told to rest until the number of their fellow servants is completed (Revelation 6:9–11).

  6. Sixth Seal – A great earthquake occurs, the sun becomes black, the moon like blood, stars fall, the sky recedes, and people hide in fear, recognizing the wrath of the Lamb (Revelation 6:12–17).

  7. Seventh Seal – When opened, there is silence in heaven for about half an hour. This seal introduces the seven trumpet judgments, further escalating God’s judgments (Revelation 8:1–2).

The seven seals represent divine judgment and the unfolding of God’s plan for the end of the age. They reveal Christ’s authority to judge the world and bring history to its appointed conclusion. Believers are reminded to remain faithful, knowing that God is in control and that His justice will prevail.
