What does the Bible say about the environment?

While the Bible does not use modern environmental terms, it clearly teaches that the earth belongs to God and that man is responsible for stewarding it. Psalm 24:1 declares, “The earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness, the world and those who dwell therein.” Creation is not ours to abuse; it is His, entrusted to our care.

From the beginning, God gave man a stewardship role. In Genesis 2:15, it says, “Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it.” Man was not only given dominion but also the duty to cultivate and preserve.

Dominion does not mean exploitation. Proverbs 12:10 shows a heart of compassion even in dominion: “A righteous man regards the life of his animal.” God’s character is reflected in how we treat what He has made.

Creation itself glorifies God. Romans 1:20 says His “invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made.” Psalm 19:1 says, “The heavens declare the glory of God.” Abusing creation is dishonoring the testimony of God’s handiwork.

Romans 8:22 teaches that creation groans under the curse of sin, awaiting redemption. Until that time, believers are called to care for the earth as a sacred trust, not a disposable possession.

Stewardship, not idolatry or neglect, defines the biblical approach to the environment. God will one day restore all things, but His people must act now in wisdom, gratitude, and care.
