The breastplate of righteousness is part of the spiritual armor of God described in Ephesians 6:10–17. Paul exhorts believers to “put on the whole armor of God,” so that they may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. In verse 14, he says, “Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness.”
The breastplate, as a piece of a soldier’s armor, protected the heart and vital organs. Spiritually, righteousness guards the believer’s heart against the accusations and temptations of the enemy. This righteousness is not one’s own merit, but the righteousness of Christ received by faith (Philippians 3:9).
Isaiah also speaks of the breastplate as part of the Lord’s own armor: “He put on righteousness as a breastplate, and a helmet of salvation on His head” (Isaiah 59:17). This portrays righteousness as both divine and defensive, a part of God’s nature and protection.
To put on the breastplate of righteousness means to live in integrity, holiness, and obedience to God’s commands. It involves walking in the righteousness that comes from Christ and living out that righteousness in practical godliness.
The breastplate not only defends the believer from internal corruption but also from external spiritual attack. It is essential for standing firm in faith, resisting temptation, and maintaining fellowship with God.
