What does the Bible say about redemption?

Redemption is the act of being bought back, delivered, or rescued from bondage by the payment of a price. The Bible declares that Jesus Christ is the Redeemer who paid the full price for sin. Ephesians 1:7 says, “In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace.”

From the beginning, God made provision to redeem His people. Exodus 6:6 speaks of God’s deliverance of Israel from slavery in Egypt, saying, “I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great judgments.” This act foreshadowed the greater redemption through Christ.

Galatians 3:13 explains, “Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us.” He took the punishment that we deserved in order to free us from the bondage of sin and death.

1 Peter 1:18-19 declares, “Knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct… but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.” The price of redemption is not monetary; it is the perfect sacrifice of the Son of God.

Redemption brings new life and purpose. Titus 2:14 says Jesus “gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people.” The redeemed are not only forgiven but also transformed.

The believer now belongs to Christ. 1 Corinthians 6:20 reminds us, “For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.”
