What does the Bible say about pride?

Pride is strongly condemned in Scripture. Proverbs 16:18 warns, “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.” Pride is not just a character flaw, it is a spiritual danger that leads to ruin.

God actively opposes the proud. James 4:6 and 1 Peter 5:5 both state, “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” Pride sets a person in opposition to God, because it exalts self above the rightful authority of the Lord.

Lucifer’s fall in Isaiah 14:12-15 is rooted in pride. He said in his heart, “I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God… I will be like the Most High.” God’s judgment was swift and severe—he was cast down to Sheol.

Nebuchadnezzar, in Daniel 4:30-37, declared the greatness of his own kingdom and was immediately struck down by God, living like a beast until he acknowledged that “those who walk in pride He is able to put down.”

Proverbs 8:13 says, “The fear of the Lord is to hate evil; pride and arrogance and the evil way and the perverse mouth I hate.” Pride blinds a man to his need for God and makes him wise in his own eyes, which leads to judgment (Proverbs 26:12).

God calls His people to humility, recognizing our total dependence on Him. Micah 6:8 commands us to “walk humbly with your God.”
