What does the Bible say about miracles?

Miracles in the Bible are extraordinary acts of God that intervene in the natural order to accomplish His will, reveal His power, and confirm His messengers. They are not magic or spectacle but divine works done to glorify God and advance His purposes.

Throughout Scripture, miracles accompanied major moments in God’s redemptive plan. In the Old Testament, Moses performed miracles to deliver Israel from Egypt: turning water into blood, parting the Red Sea, and bringing water from a rock (Exodus 7–17). These were signs of God’s power and authority.

In the ministry of Jesus, miracles affirmed His identity as the Son of God. He healed the sick, cast out demons, raised the dead, and calmed storms. John 20:30–31 explains their purpose:

“And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples… but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God.”

The apostles also performed miracles in the book of Acts, validating the Gospel message and establishing the church. Acts 5:12 says:

“And through the hands of the apostles many signs and wonders were done among the people.”

While miracles were prominent during specific periods, especially the ministries of Moses, Elijah, Jesus, and the apostles, God has never been limited by time. He may still perform miracles according to His will. However, they are not the norm, nor are they guaranteed to all believers. Faith is not dependent on miracles but on God’s Word.

The purpose of miracles has never been to entertain or to glorify men. They were always meant to confirm truth, bring repentance, and glorify God. When men seek miracles for signs, rather than seeking the truth of God’s Word, they fall into error. Jesus warned in Matthew 12:39:

“An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign.”

God may still do the miraculous today, but the Christian walks by faith in the Scriptures, not by the pursuit of signs and wonders.
