The Bible presents marriage as a covenant, not merely a contract. It is a sacred, lifelong union between one man and one woman, designed by God for companionship, procreation, and the reflection of Christ’s relationship with the Church.
God instituted marriage at creation:
“Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” (Genesis 2:24)
Marriage is rooted in creation, not culture. Jesus affirmed this in the Gospels:
“So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.” (Matthew 19:6)
Marriage is a picture of Christ and the Church:
“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her…” (Ephesians 5:25)
“This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church.” (Ephesians 5:32)
In this model, the husband lovingly leads and sacrifices, and the wife respectfully submits and supports. This divine design brings unity, joy, and spiritual growth.
Marriage is to be held in honor:
“Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge.” (Hebrews 13:4)
It is also a protective relationship that helps guard against immorality:
“Because of sexual immorality, let each man have his own wife, and let each woman have her own husband.” (1 Corinthians 7:2)
Though marriage is not required for all, it is a God-ordained institution that upholds moral order, nurtures families, and glorifies the Creator when lived according to His Word.
