What does the Bible say about love?

Love is the foundation of God’s nature and the core of His commands. 1 John 4:8 declares, “God is love.” Everything He does flows from His holy, perfect love.

Jesus identifies love as the greatest commandment. In Matthew 22:37-39, He says, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind… and… You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two.

Love is not merely a feeling but an action rooted in sacrifice and obedience. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 describes it: “Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy… bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.”

Romans 5:8 shows God’s love in action: “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” True love gives, serves, and forgives.

John 13:35 teaches that love is the mark of discipleship: “By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Love is the fulfillment of the law (Romans 13:10), the bond of perfection (Colossians 3:14), and the greatest of all virtues (1 Corinthians 13:13). It is to be genuine (Romans 12:9) and not based on convenience or preference.

To love biblically is to reflect the heart of God in every relationship and action.
