What does the Bible say about Jesus calming the storm?

The event of Jesus calming the storm is recorded in Matthew 8:23–27, Mark 4:35–41, and Luke 8:22–25. It demons/”>demonstrates His authority over nature and the necessity of faith in the midst of fear.

One evening, Jesus said to His disciples, “Let us cross over to the other side” of the Sea of Galilee. As they sailed, Jesus fell asleep in the boat. Suddenly, a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat so that it was filling with water. The disciples, many of whom were experienced fishermen, feared for their lives.

They came to Jesus and woke Him, saying, “Lord, save us! We are perishing!” (Matthew 8:25). In Mark, they asked, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?” (Mark 4:38). Jesus arose and rebuked the wind and the sea, saying, “Peace, be still!” Immediately, the wind ceased and there was a great calm (Mark 4:39).

Then He said to them, “Why are you fearful, O you of little faith?” (Matthew 8:26), and “How is it that you have no faith?” (Mark 4:40). The disciples marveled, saying, “Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?” (Mark 4:41).

This event reveals Jesus as the Creator who holds power over the elements, confirming His divine nature. It also exposes the weakness of the disciples’ faith, despite His presence and previous works. The contrast between the violent storm and the calm that followed His command reflects the peace He brings in the midst of life’s turmoil.

The miracle teaches that believers are not exempt from storms, but in every trial, Christ is present, and His word is sufficient to bring peace. It calls us to trust Him fully, even when circumstances seem overwhelming.
