What does the Bible say about Hezekiah?

Hezekiah was one of Judah’s most faithful and reform-minded kings, reigning in Jerusalem for 29 years. His story is recorded in 2 Kings 18–20, 2 Chronicles 29–32, and Isaiah 36–39. He is remembered for his trust in the Lord, his restoration of temple worship, and his miraculous deliverance from death and military threat.

2 Kings 18:5–6 gives this summary of his character:

“He trusted in the Lord God of Israel… For he held fast to the Lord; he did not depart from following Him, but kept His commandments.”

Hezekiah became king after a period of great spiritual decline under his father, Ahaz. He immediately initiated reforms: reopening the temple, removing idols, reinstituting the Passover, and calling both Judah and remnants of Israel to return to the Lord (2 Chronicles 30:1–27).

When the Assyrian king Sennacherib invaded Judah and mocked God, Hezekiah turned to prayer and sought counsel from the prophet Isaiah. 2 Kings 19:15 shows his humble prayer:

“O Lord God of Israel… You are God, You alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth.”

God answered by sending the Angel of the Lord (Pre-incarnate Jesus), who struck down 185,000 Assyrian soldiers in one night (2 Kings 19:35), delivering Jerusalem without a battle.

Later, Hezekiah became mortally ill, and God told him to prepare for death. He prayed earnestly, and God added fifteen more years to his life (2 Kings 20:5–6). However, during this time, he made a critical mistake by showing Babylonian envoys all his wealth and resources, leading to a prophecy of future Babylonian captivity (2 Kings 20:12–18).

Hezekiah’s life is a testimony of God’s faithfulness to those who trust Him, the power of prayer, and the danger of pride even in the lives of godly leaders. He is remembered as one who “did what was good and right and true before the Lord his God” (2 Chronicles 31:20).
