What does the Bible say about Ezekiel’s valley of dry bones?

Ezekiel’s vision of the valley of dry bones is found in Ezekiel 37:1-14. In this vision, the Spirit of the Lord brought Ezekiel to a valley full of bones, and they were very dry, lifeless and scattered. God asked him, “Son of man, can these bones live?” and Ezekiel wisely responded, “O Lord God, You know” (Ezekiel 37:3).

God then commanded Ezekiel to prophesy over the bones. As he did, there was a rattling noise, and the bones came together, flesh and skin covered them, but there was no breath in them. Then the Lord told Ezekiel to prophesy to the breath, and when he did, the breath entered them, and they stood on their feet, an exceedingly great army (Ezekiel 37:10).

God explained the meaning: “These bones are the whole house of Israel. They indeed say, ‘Our bones are dry, our hope is lost.’” (Ezekiel 37:11). The vision symbolized national restoration. Though Israel was exiled and scattered, God promised to bring them back to their land and to put His Spirit in them, so they would live.

The valley of dry bones teaches that even when things seem utterly dead, God can restore, renew, and breathe life where there is none. This is not only about national revival but is also a vivid picture of spiritual resurrection. Romans 8:11 says, “But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He… will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit.”

The vision reveals God’s power to resurrect what is dead and His faithfulness to His covenant people.
