What does the Bible say about Bilhah and Zilpah?

Bilhah and Zilpah were maidservants who became secondary wives to Jacob and mothers to several of the tribes of Israel. Their roles in the biblical narrative illustrate the complexities of ancient family structures and God’s providential work even through human conflict and rivalry.

Bilhah was the handmaid of Rachel, Jacob’s beloved wife. When Rachel was barren and desperate to give Jacob children, she gave Bilhah to him as a wife. Genesis 30:3 records Rachel’s reasoning:

“Here is my maid Bilhah; go in to her, and she will bear a child on my knees, that I also may have children by her.”

Bilhah bore Jacob two sons: Dan and Naphtali (Genesis 30:5–8).

Zilpah was the maidservant of Leah. After Leah stopped bearing children, she also gave her maid to Jacob. Zilpah bore him two sons: Gad and Asher (Genesis 30:9–13).

These women were drawn into the rivalry between Rachel and Leah, as each tried to secure their status through the number of sons they gave Jacob. Though their children were born out of human schemes and strife, God still honored them by including them in the twelve tribes of Israel.

Their sons became leaders of tribes with lasting roles in Israel’s history, showing that God can use even flawed family situations for His greater purposes.

Though Bilhah and Zilpah are not the focus of detailed narratives, their place in the covenant family is secure. The inclusion of their sons in the foundational tribes of Israel confirms that God’s blessings are not limited by human hierarchies or expectations.
