What are the seven trumpet judgments?

The seven trumpet judgments in Revelation symbolize a series of escalating divine judgments during the end times, unfolding after the opening of the seventh seal. These trumpet blasts serve as solemn warnings, demonstrating God’s wrath against unrepentant humanity and His desire that people turn to Him before the final outpouring of judgment. They are described in Revelation chapters 8 through 11.

After the seventh seal is opened, seven angels are given seven trumpets:

“And I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and to them were given seven trumpets.” (Revelation 8:2)

Each trumpet announces a specific judgment:

First Trumpet – Hail and Fire Mixed with Blood

“And a third of the trees were burned up, and all green grass was burned up.” (Revelation 8:7)

This judgment strikes the earth’s vegetation, burning a third of the trees and all green grass. It symbolizes devastating natural calamities affecting life’s basic resources.

Second Trumpet – Burning Mountain Cast into the Sea

“And a third of the sea became blood.” (Revelation 8:8)

A third of the sea becomes blood, destroying marine life and sinking many ships. This represents ecological and economic disruption on a massive scale.

Third Trumpet – Great Star Called Wormwood

“And the name of the star is Wormwood. A third of the waters became wormwood, and many men died from the water.” (Revelation 8:11)

A blazing star falls from heaven, poisoning a third of the rivers and springs. Many die from drinking the bitter waters. This indicates a judgment that contaminates essential resources, bringing widespread suffering.

Fourth Trumpet – Darkness Over Celestial Bodies

“A third of the sun was struck, a third of the moon, and a third of the stars.” (Revelation 8:12)

A third of the sun, moon, and stars is darkened, reducing daylight and night light. This cosmic disturbance signals instability and the removal of natural order, creating fear and chaos.

Fifth Trumpet – Locusts from the Bottomless Pit

“And to them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power.” (Revelation 9:3)

Demonic locust-like creatures are released to torment humanity for five months. Their attack does not kill but inflicts severe suffering on those without God’s seal, showing a judgment that targets rebellious mankind.

Sixth Trumpet – Four Angels Released at the Euphrates

“And the number of the army of the horsemen was two hundred million.” (Revelation 9:16)

Four angels bound at the Euphrates lead an army of 200 million, causing massive destruction and the death of a third of mankind. Despite this severe judgment, the rest of humanity still refuses to repent.

Seventh Trumpet – Proclamation of God’s Kingdom

“The kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ.” (Revelation 11:15)

Unlike the others, this trumpet heralds the ultimate triumph of God’s kingdom: “The kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ.” It signals the completion of God’s plan and introduces the final bowl judgments.

The seven trumpet judgments show that God’s judgments are progressive, purposeful, and just. They reveal His holiness and patience, giving people repeated opportunities to repent. For believers, these events confirm that Christ reigns and that His victory over evil is certain.
