Yes, God created the world in six literal, 24-hour days according to the plain reading of Scripture. The creation account in Genesis 1 uses the Hebrew word “yom” for “day,” and it is consistently paired with a number and the phrase “evening and morning,” which in Hebrew narrative always indicates a normal, solar day.
“So the evening and the morning were the first day.” (Genesis 1:5)
This pattern is repeated for all six days of creation, clearly establishing the time frame:
“So the evening and the morning were the second day… the third day… the fourth day… the fifth day… the sixth day.” (Genesis 1:8, 13, 19, 23, 31)
There is no indication in the text that these days represent long ages or symbolic periods. In fact, Exodus confirms the literal understanding when God established the Sabbath for Israel:
“For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.” (Exodus 20:11)
God’s workweek and man’s workweek are directly paralleled. The week was modeled on six literal days of labor followed by one day of rest. This would not make sense if the days were long periods of time.
The New Testament also treats the Genesis account as historical and literal. Jesus referenced the creation of man and woman as occurring “from the beginning of the creation,” not after billions of years:
“But from the beginning of the creation, God ‘made them male and female.’” (Mark 10:6)
The belief in six literal days of creation is foundational to a biblical worldview. If Genesis is not taken as literal history, the foundation for sin, death, and redemption is undermined. Scripture says that death entered the world through Adam’s sin, not as a process through evolutionary death over millions of years:
“Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin…” (Romans 5:12)
Altering the clear teaching of Genesis to fit secular scientific theories compromises the authority of Scripture:
“Let God be true but every man a liar.” (Romans 3:4)
Believing in a literal six-day creation honors the Word of God as it is written and upholds the consistency of biblical doctrine from Genesis to Revelation.
