Can Christians believe in evolution?

Christians cannot believe in evolution without contradicting the clear teaching of the Bible. Evolutionary theory, particularly the idea of humans evolving from lower life forms over millions of years, stands in opposition to the biblical account of creation. The Bible teaches that God created all things directly and intentionally, not through random processes or death-driven natural selection.

Genesis 1 records that God created the heavens, the earth, and all life in six literal days:

“For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day.” (Exodus 20:11)

Man was not the result of evolution but a direct act of God:

“And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.” (Genesis 2:7)

“So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” (Genesis 1:27)

The New Testament confirms the historical truth of Genesis. Jesus affirmed the creation of Adam and Eve as the first human pair:

“But from the beginning of the creation, God ‘made them male and female.’” (Mark 10:6)

Paul also referred to Adam as a real historical figure, through whom sin and death entered the world:

“Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men.” (Romans 5:12)

Theistic evolution, which tries to combine God and evolutionary theory, undermines the foundational doctrines of sin, death, and salvation. If death existed before Adam’s sin, then the entire basis for the gospel is compromised:

“For since by man came death, by Man also came the resurrection of the dead.” (1 Corinthians 15:21)

Furthermore, evolutionary theory depends on the assumption that the Bible is not a literal or accurate historical record. This undermines the authority and inerrancy of Scripture:

“Every word of God is pure; He is a shield to those who put their trust in Him.” (Proverbs 30:5)

The biblical account presents a clear, direct creation by a wise and powerful Creator. Evolution, by contrast, is based on naturalistic assumptions and denies the supernatural work of God in creation. Christians must uphold the truth of Scripture over the theories of men:

“Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men… and not according to Christ.” (Colossians 2:8)

True faith submits to God’s Word as final authority. Believing in evolution contradicts the plain teaching of Scripture and weakens the foundation of the gospel.
