Are Roman Catholics Christian?

Roman Catholicism teaches many biblical truths, such as the Trinity and the virgin birth, but its doctrine of salvation, authority, and the role of Mary contradicts Scripture. While individuals within Catholicism may be saved if they trust solely in Christ, the system itself promotes a different gospel.

Catholic doctrine teaches that salvation comes through faith plus works, including baptism, the Mass, confession, penance, and adherence to the Church. This undermines the biblical teaching that salvation is by grace alone through faith:

“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.” (Ephesians 2:8–9)

The Catholic Mass is said to be a continual, unbloody sacrifice of Christ. Yet Scripture declares that Christ’s sacrifice was once for all:

“By one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.” (Hebrews 10:14)

Roman Catholics are also taught to venerate Mary as the “Queen of Heaven” and as a mediator. However, the Bible says:

“For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus.” (1 Timothy 2:5)

The Church also elevates tradition and papal authority to the same level as Scripture, despite the Bible’s clear warning:

“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God… that the man of God may be complete.” (2 Timothy 3:16–17)

Furthermore, Catholics are taught to pray to saints and confess sins to priests, practices not found in the New Testament. The gospel is distorted when human works, rituals, and intermediaries are added.

“I marvel that you are turning away so soon… to a different gospel.” (Galatians 1:6)

Roman Catholicism contains enough truth to appear Christian but adds doctrines that are incompatible with the gospel. Therefore, while individual Catholics may be genuinely saved, the system of Roman Catholicism is not Christian according to Scripture.
