Life in the hand
Here’s what it means
A person is risking life or living in immediate danger.
Why the Bible says it this way
The picture suggests something precious held where it could easily be dropped or taken.
An idiom is a familiar phrase whose meaning comes from the whole expression, not from reading each word by itself.
