Why were the Gershonites responsible for curtains and coverings?

The Gershonites were given the duty of carrying the curtains, coverings, and hangings of the tabernacle. Their role was essential because the fabric elements made up the visible structure and boundary of God’s dwelling, separating what was holy from what was common. Without their work, the tabernacle could not be properly set up or maintained.

“This is the service of the families of the Gershonites, in serving and carrying: They shall carry the curtains of the tabernacle and the tabernacle of meeting with its covering, the covering of badger skins that is on it, the screen for the door of the tabernacle of meeting, the screen for the door of the gate of the court, the hangings of the court which are around the tabernacle and altar, and their cords, all their furnishings and all their service.” (Numbers 4:24–26)

By assigning this responsibility to the Gershonites, God ensured that the beauty, order, and holiness of His dwelling place were preserved. Their work, though less prominent than carrying the holy objects, was just as necessary for guarding the sanctity of the Lord’s house and making it ready for His presence among His people.
