What does it mean for the king to write a copy of the law?

For the king to write a copy of the law means that he was personally responsible for transcribing the words of God as given through Moses, and reading it continually. This was not merely symbolic; it was a divine command to ensure the king lived under God’s authority and led the people according to His statutes.

“Also it shall be, when he sits on the throne of his kingdom, that he shall write for himself a copy of this law in a book… and it shall be with him, and he shall read it all the days of his life.” (Deuteronomy 17:18–19)

This practice would engrain God’s Word into the king’s heart and mind. It was intended to keep him from pride, remind him of his accountability, and guide his decisions with the fear of the Lord. The law was not to be distant or handled by others alone… the king himself had to know it intimately.

“That his heart may not be lifted above his brethren, that he may not turn aside from the commandment to the right hand or to the left…” (Deuteronomy 17:20)

This ensured that his reign would be long and stable, grounded in righteousness. Godly leadership flows from submission to God’s Word, and this command placed the king under the same spiritual standard as every Israelite.
