What does it mean that man was created in the image of God?

Genesis 1:26–27 records one of the most foundational truths in Scripture:

“Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.’ So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.”

Being made in the image of God does not mean humans share God’s divine nature or attributes such as omnipotence or omniscience. Instead, it means humanity reflects God in a unique way that sets us apart from the rest of creation. This image includes several key aspects:

Rational and Moral Capacity: Humans possess intellect, reason, and the ability to choose between right and wrong. Unlike animals, we have a conscience and are accountable to God.

Spiritual Nature: We were created to have fellowship with God. Ecclesiastes 3:11 says God has “put eternity in their hearts,” indicating that we are spiritual beings made for eternal relationship with Him.

Dominion and Stewardship: God entrusted humans with authority over creation:

“Have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” (Genesis 1:28)

This dominion is not a license for exploitation but a responsibility to care for and manage creation under God’s authority.

Relational Capacity: Just as God exists in eternal relationship within the Trinity, humans are designed for relationships, with Him and with each other. This is reflected in God’s creation of male and female and the institution of marriage (Genesis 2:18–24).

The image of God gives every human life inherent dignity and worth. It is the basis for moral responsibility, the sanctity of life, and the call to love others. Though sin has marred this image, it has not destroyed it (Genesis 9:6, James 3:9). Through Christ, believers are renewed in knowledge and righteousness:

“And have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him.” (Colossians 3:10)

The image of God defines who we are and why we exist: to reflect His glory in every aspect of life.
