The account of Jesus cleansing ten lepers, found in Luke 17:11–19, highlights the importance of gratitude and faith in response to God’s mercy. As Jesus traveled toward Jerusalem, ten lepers cried out for healing:
“Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!” (Luke 17:13)
Jesus instructed them:
“Go, show yourselves to the priests.” (Luke 17:14)
As they went in obedience, they were cleansed. This demons/”>demonstrated faith because they acted on Jesus’ word before seeing the healing. However, only one returned to thank Him:
“And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, returned, and with a loud voice glorified God, and fell down on his face at His feet, giving Him thanks. And he was a Samaritan.” (Luke 17:15–16)
Jesus asked:
“Were there not ten cleansed? But where are the nine?” (Luke 17:17)
The ingratitude of the nine contrasts with the humility and worship of the one. This man not only received physical healing but also spiritual blessing:
“Your faith has made you well.” (Luke 17:19)
The other nine were cleansed outwardly, but the grateful Samaritan experienced inward transformation through faith.
This event teaches that God desires more than requests for help, He desires thankful hearts that glorify Him. It warns against taking His blessings for granted and shows that true faith responds with worship and gratitude.
In summary, this account of the ten lepers reminds us that while many may experience God’s goodness, few respond with sincere thanksgiving and devotion.
