Why did God create Satan?

God created all things good, including the being who later became Satan. Originally, Satan was a created angelic being named Lucifer, described as full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.

Ezekiel 28:14–15 says:

“You were the anointed cherub who covers… You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created, till iniquity was found in you.”

Lucifer had a high position in God’s creation, possibly overseeing worship or leadership among the angels. But he was not created evil. He had free will, and he chose pride and rebellion.

Isaiah 14:12–14 records his fall:

“How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning… For you have said in your heart: ‘I will ascend into heaven… I will exalt my throne… I will be like the Most High.’”

Satan became the adversary of God and mankind when he sinned and led a rebellion. Revelation 12:4 suggests he drew a third of the angels with him. God cast him out of heaven as judgment.

God did not create evil, but He did create beings with the capacity to choose. This is part of true love and freedom. Satan’s fall reveals the danger of pride and self-exaltation.

1 Timothy 3:6 warns about pride, saying a man should not be a novice:

“…lest being puffed up with pride he fall into the same condemnation as the devil.”

Though Satan is a powerful spiritual enemy, his time is limited. God will ultimately destroy him:

“The devil… was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone… and will be tormented day and night forever and ever.” (Revelation 20:10)

God’s purpose in allowing Satan to exist includes the testing of mankind, the revelation of God’s justice and mercy, and the ultimate demons/”>demonstration of His triumph over evil through Christ.
