David danced before the Lord as an expression of pure joy, worship, and thanksgiving during the return of the ark of the covenant to Jerusalem. His actions reflected a heart fully devoted to God, celebrating His presence among the people.
When the ark was being brought back, David and all Israel rejoiced:
“Then David danced before the Lord with all his might; and David was wearing a linen ephod.”
(2 Samuel 6:14)
The ark represented God’s throne and presence. After years of neglect during Saul’s reign, its return marked a spiritual restoration. David led the procession with music, shouting, and celebration:
“So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the Lord with shouting and with the sound of the trumpet.”
(2 Samuel 6:15)
His dance was not done for performance or popularity. It was an act of humility and worship, removing his royal garments and wearing a simple ephod to identify himself with the people and the priests.
Michal, Saul’s daughter and David’s wife, despised him for this:
“How glorious was the king of Israel today, uncovering himself… as one of the base fellows shamelessly uncovers himself!”
(2 Samuel 6:20)
David replied:
“It was before the Lord, who chose me instead of your father… I will be even more undignified than this, and will be humble in my own sight.”
(2 Samuel 6:21–22)
David’s worship was marked by sincerity and humility. He was not concerned with appearances but with honoring God.
