The reign of King Solomon was marked by unprecedented peace, wealth, and wisdom in Israel. He was the son of David and Bathsheba, chosen by God to succeed David and build the temple. 1 Chronicles 28:6 says, “Now He said to me, ‘It is your son Solomon who shall build My house and My courts.’”
When Solomon became king, he asked God not for riches or power, but for wisdom to govern the people. God granted this request and gave him not only wisdom but also honor and wealth (1 Kings 3:11-13). His wisdom became legendary, drawing rulers from around the world, including the Queen of Sheba, who came to test him and marveled at his answers (1 Kings 10:1-9).
Solomon built the temple in Jerusalem, fulfilling what God had promised David. 1 Kings 6:1 marks the beginning of construction, and after seven years, he completed and dedicated it in a great ceremony where the glory of the Lord filled the house (1 Kings 8:10-11).
His reign was a high point in Israel’s history. Israel lived in peace, every man “under his vine and under his fig tree” (1 Kings 4:25), and the nation expanded its influence and prosperity.
Yet Solomon’s heart turned away from God. He loved many foreign women, and in his old age, they turned his heart after other gods (1 Kings 11:4). As a result, God declared that the kingdom would be torn from his son, though not in Solomon’s lifetime for David’s sake (1 Kings 11:11-13).
Solomon’s reign shows the blessings of obedience and the danger of compromise. His wisdom was great, but it did not prevent his fall when he allowed idolatry into his heart.
