What does the Bible say about death?

Death entered the world through sin, as Romans 5:12 says, “Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned.” It is the consequence of the fall, but for the believer, death is not the end.

Ecclesiastes 3:2 reminds us that there is “a time to be born, and a time to die.” It is appointed by God, as Hebrews 9:27 declares, “And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment.”

For the believer, death is a departure from this life to be with Christ. Paul wrote in Philippians 1:21, “For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” Again, in 2 Corinthians 5:8, “We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord.”

Jesus declares in John 11:25-26, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?”

Death is a reality for all, but for those who are in Christ, it is the doorway into eternal life, rest, and joy. For the unbeliever, it is the beginning of judgment from God, as seen in Luke 16:22-26 with the rich man and Lazarus.
