God is described as mighty, awesome, and impartial to highlight His absolute authority, holiness, and justice. These attributes set Him apart from all other rulers and gods. He is not swayed by appearances, status, or bribes. His greatness inspires fear and reverence, while His impartiality guarantees that all are judged by the same standard.
“For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality nor takes a bribe.” (Deuteronomy 10:17)
Moses emphasized these qualities to teach Israel that their obedience must be rooted in the fear of the Lord, not in ritual alone. God’s might means He is able to defend and bless His people, but also to discipline and judge. His awesomeness demands worship with reverence. His impartiality means He cannot be manipulated or flattered. The widow, the orphan, and the stranger are just as important in His eyes as the priest or king.
This view of God shaped Israel’s legal and moral system. They were to reflect His character in how they treated others, especially the vulnerable, knowing that He watches without favoritism.
