Why did David eat the showbread?

David ate the showbread when fleeing from Saul because it was the only available food, and the priest gave it to him under exceptional circumstances. While the law restricted the showbread to priests, this act was not condemned by God because it preserved life and honored the higher principle of mercy over ritual.

“So the priest gave him holy bread; for there was no bread there but the showbread which had been taken from before the Lord, in order to put hot bread in its place on the day when it was taken away.”
(1 Samuel 21:6)

The showbread, also called the bread of the Presence, was set before the Lord continually in the tabernacle and was to be eaten only by the priests:

“And it shall be for Aaron and his sons, and they shall eat it in a holy place; for it is most holy to him from the offerings of the Lord made by fire, by a perpetual statute.”
(Leviticus 24:9)

When David came to Nob, he was hungry and on the run. Ahimelech the priest, recognizing the urgency, asked whether the men had kept themselves from women, a ritual requirement, and upon confirmation, gave them the holy bread.

Jesus later referenced this incident to highlight the principle that human need can rightly take precedence over ceremonial law:

“Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: how he went into the house of God and ate the showbread… which was not lawful for him to eat, nor for those who were with him, but only for the priests?”
(Matthew 12:3–4)

Jesus used this example to defend His disciples for plucking grain on the Sabbath, showing that God desires mercy and understanding over rigid legalism.

“But if you had known what this means, ‘I desire mercy and not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the guiltless.”
(Matthew 12:7)

David eating the showbread was not an act of rebellion but of necessity. It reveals God’s mercy in times of genuine need and serves as a precedent for prioritizing the spirit of the law over its letter when the two appear to conflict.
