What is sanctification?

Sanctification is the process by which a believer is set apart for God’s purposes and made holy through the work of the Holy Spirit and obedience to the Word of God. It begins at salvation and continues throughout a Christian’s life.

The word “sanctify” means to make holy, to separate from sin, and to dedicate to God. Jesus prayed to the Father for this work in believers:

“Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.” (John 17:17)

There are three aspects of sanctification in the believer’s life:

Positional Sanctification – When a person is saved, they are immediately set apart in Christ:

“But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus…” (1 Corinthians 6:11)

Progressive Sanctification

– The ongoing process of becoming more like Christ through obedience and spiritual growth:

“But as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct.” (1 Peter 1:15)

“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind…” (Romans 12:2)

Final Sanctification (Glorification)

– The completion of sanctification when believers are made perfect in eternity:

“Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him…” (1 John 3:2)

Sanctification is not earned by human effort alone but is empowered by the Holy Spirit:

“For it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.” (Philippians 2:13)

However, believers must cooperate with that work by putting off sin and pursuing holiness:

“Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.” (2 Corinthians 7:1)

Sanctification proves the reality of salvation. It is the evidence of a transformed life, marked by growing obedience, repentance, and a desire to please God in all things.

“Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord.” (Hebrews 12:14)
