What does the Bible say about the ascension of Jesus?

The ascension of Jesus took place forty days after His resurrection. After appearing to many and teaching about the kingdom of God, He led His disciples to the Mount of Olives. There, He gave them the Great Commission and the promise of the Holy Spirit. Acts 1:9 says, “Now when He had spoken these things… He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight.”

As they watched Him go, two angels appeared and said, “This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven” (Acts 1:11). His ascension was literal, bodily, and visible, confirming His glorification and return to the Father.

The ascension marked the end of Jesus’ earthly ministry and the beginning of His heavenly intercession. Hebrews 4:14 says, “We have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God.” He now sits at the right hand of God, reigning with all authority (Mark 16:19; Ephesians 1:20-21).

Jesus ascended to prepare a place for His people and to send the Holy Spirit. John 16:7 says, “It is to your advantage that I go away… the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.”

The ascension assures believers of Christ’s ongoing work in heaven and His promised return. It is a vital part of the gospel, pointing forward to the day when He will come again in power and glory.
