What does the Bible say about strange fire (Nadab and Abihu)?

The account of Nadab and Abihu offering “strange fire” is a sobering reminder of God’s holiness and the danger of worship that departs from His instructions. It is found in Leviticus 10:1–2:

“Then Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censer and put fire in it, put incense on it, and offered profane fire before the Lord, which He had not commanded them. So fire went out from the Lord and devoured them, and they died before the Lord.”

The phrase “strange fire” (or “profane fire”) refers to unauthorized worship, something not commanded by God. The exact nature of their offense is not fully detailed, but it involved approaching God in a way that violated His clear instructions.

These two men were not ordinary Israelites. They were the sons of Aaron, the high priest, and had been appointed to serve in the tabernacle. Their familiarity with the sacred did not exempt them from the consequences of disobedience.

Their death by fire was immediate and public. God used their punishment to demons/”>demonstrate that worship must be holy and reverent. Leviticus 10:3 gives God’s explanation:

“By those who come near Me I must be regarded as holy; and before all the people I must be glorified.”

This event took place at the beginning of Israel’s priestly ministry and served as a permanent lesson: God is not to be approached casually, emotionally, or in a manner that pleases man instead of Him.

It stands as a warning against innovation in worship, particularly when it contradicts God’s established commands. Even zeal or sincerity does not justify disobedience when dealing with sacred things.

The account of Nadab and Abihu reminds us that worship must be God-centered, God-defined, and approached with reverence. He is holy, and those who serve Him must honor Him according to His Word.
