What does the Bible say about Pharaoh’s dreams?

Pharaoh’s dreams, recorded in Genesis 41, were prophetic revelations from God given to the king of Egypt, foretelling years of abundance followed by years of famine. Pharaoh first dreamed of seven fat cows being devoured by seven thin, gaunt cows, and then of seven plump heads of grain being consumed by seven thin, blighted ones (Genesis 41:1-7). These dreams troubled him deeply, and none of Egypt’s magicians or wise men could interpret them.

Joseph, who had been imprisoned unjustly, was summoned after the chief butler remembered his ability to interpret dreams through God. Joseph made it clear that interpretation belongs to God (Genesis 41:16), and then he explained the meaning: both dreams were one and the same. Genesis 41:29-30 says, “Indeed seven years of great plenty will come throughout all the land of Egypt; but after them seven years of famine will arise.”

Joseph not only interpreted the dreams but also offered wise counsel, he advised Pharaoh to appoint overseers to store surplus grain during the years of abundance to prepare for the famine. Pharaoh recognized the wisdom of God in Joseph and appointed him as second-in-command over all Egypt (Genesis 41:38-40).

These dreams were not random, they were divine warnings with redemptive purpose. God used them to position Joseph for His plan, to preserve the lives of countless people, including the line of the Messiah.

Pharaoh’s dreams remind us that God speaks even to rulers for the sake of His greater purposes. He reveals secrets not to flatter the powerful, but to fulfill His will. Amos 3:7 says, “Surely the Lord God does nothing, unless He reveals His secret to His servants the prophets.”
