The mustard seed is mentioned by Jesus as a symbol of small beginnings with great outcomes, particularly in reference to faith and the kingdom of God. Though it is one of the smallest seeds used by farmers in that region, it grows into a large plant, emphasizing unexpected growth and power.
In Matthew 13:31–32, Jesus says:
“The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field, which indeed is the least of all the seeds; but when it is grown, it is greater than the herbs and becomes a tree.”
This parable teaches that God’s kingdom may start small and unnoticeable, but it grows powerfully and significantly beyond human expectation. What begins in humility and simplicity becomes something mighty and far-reaching.
Jesus also used the mustard seed to illustrate the power of genuine faith. In Matthew 17:20, He tells His disciples:
“If you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.”
The point is not the size of faith, but its authenticity and focus. Even faith that seems small to man, when rooted in God, can accomplish great things.
The mustard seed reminds believers not to despise small beginnings, whether in personal growth, ministry, or prayer. God delights in taking what appears insignificant and using it for His glory and purposes.
