What does the Bible say about Job?

Job is known as a man of integrity and deep faith, tested through immense suffering. He is introduced in Job 1:1 as “blameless and upright, and one who feared God and shunned evil.” He was also very wealthy, possessing great flocks, herds, and a large family.

In a heavenly scene, Satan challenges Job’s righteousness, suggesting that he only serves God because of his prosperity. God permits Satan to test him, saying, “Behold, all that he has is in your power; only do not lay a hand on his person” (Job 1:12). In a single day, Job loses his livestock, servants, and all ten of his children. Yet he responds, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return there. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord” (Job 1:21).

When Satan attacks Job’s health, covering him with painful boils, Job still refuses to curse God. His wife urges him to, but he replies, “Shall we indeed accept good from God, and shall we not accept adversity?” (Job 2:10).

Three friends come to comfort Job, but they wrongly accuse him, insisting his suffering must be the result of hidden sin. Job maintains his innocence, longs for justice, and questions God, yet never curses Him. Eventually, God speaks from the whirlwind, declaring His sovereign wisdom and power. Job humbly replies, “I have heard of You by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees You. Therefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes” (Job 42:5-6).

God rebukes Job’s friends, restores Job’s fortunes, and blesses him with double what he had before. Job 42:10 says, “The Lord gave Job twice as much as he had before.”

Job’s life teaches that God’s purposes are often hidden from man’s understanding, but His wisdom, justice, and mercy remain perfect. Faith is not based on blessings but on the character of God Himself.
