What does the Bible say about eagles?

Eagles in Scripture symbolize strength, renewal, protection, and God’s sovereign care. Their powerful flight and sharp vision made them ideal illustrations for divine truths, especially concerning God’s dealings with His people.

One of the most well-known verses is Isaiah 40:31:

“But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.”

This passage uses the eagle to convey renewed spiritual strength and endurance for those who trust in the Lord. Just as eagles soar above storms, believers are lifted above trials through faith and reliance on God.

In Exodus 19:4, God reminded Israel of how He delivered them from Egypt:

“You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to Myself.”

This image shows God’s protective and guiding care, lifting and carrying His people out of bondage and into covenant relationship. Deuteronomy 32:11 also compares God’s nurturing care to that of an eagle with its young:

“As an eagle stirs up its nest, hovers over its young, spreading out its wings, taking them up, carrying them on its wings.”

Here, the eagle represents God’s training and provision, teaching His people to trust and depend on Him, even in difficult circumstances. However, eagles are also used to symbolize swift judgment. In Jeremiah 4:13, Babylon’s armies are compared to eagles in their speed and ferocity:

“Behold, he shall come up like clouds, and his chariots like a whirlwind. His horses are swifter than eagles.”

In Revelation 12:14, the woman representing God’s people is given eagle’s wings to escape the dragon, showing divine rescue and supernatural help. Eagles in the Bible reflect both the majesty and might of God, as well as the assurance of His faithful protection and the promise of spiritual strength for those who wait on Him.
