What does the Bible say about Abigail (wife of David)?

Abigail is introduced in 1 Samuel 25 as a woman of wisdom, discernment, and humility. She was married to Nabal, a wealthy but harsh and foolish man. When David and his men, who had protected Nabal’s shepherds, requested provisions, Nabal insulted David and refused to help. In response, David prepared to destroy Nabal’s household.

Abigail, upon hearing of her husband’s offense, acted swiftly. She gathered a generous gift of food and rode out to meet David. Her words were full of humility and spiritual insight. 1 Samuel 25:24 records:

“So she fell at his feet and said: ‘On me, my lord, on me let this iniquity be!’”

She appealed to David’s conscience and reminded him that vengeance belonged to the Lord, not to him. Her wise and gracious speech turned David from shedding innocent blood. David responded in 1 Samuel 25:32–33:

“Blessed is the Lord God of Israel, who sent you this day to meet me! And blessed is your advice and blessed are you.”

Shortly after, God struck Nabal, and he died. David then took Abigail as his wife.

Abigail is remembered as a woman who feared God, used wisdom under pressure, and acted righteously even in a difficult marriage. She serves as an example of godly intervention, tactful speech, and spiritual discernment. Her story illustrates how one person’s wise actions can prevent sin and bring honor to God.
