How do I know what denomination I am?

To know what denomination you are, you must first understand the doctrinal beliefs of the church you attend or associate with. Denominations are identified by their positions on core teachings such as salvation, baptism, church authority, spiritual gifts, and the Lord’s Supper. It is not about labels but about alignment with biblical doctrine.

Paul urged:

“Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves.” (2 Corinthians 13:5)

Many believers attend churches without knowing the specific doctrinal distinctives. Investigating the statement of faith, founding documents, or leadership teachings of your church will clarify what denomination it aligns with.

Some common distinctions:

  • Baptists emphasize believer’s baptism by immersion and the autonomy of the local church.
  • Methodists often emphasize sanctification and structured church governance.
  • Presbyterians hold to Reformed theology and elder-led church structure.
  • Pentecostals emphasize speaking in tongues and the continuation of spiritual gifts.
  • Non-denominational churches often avoid affiliation but still follow certain traditions.

Scripture warns us against following men or traditions:

“Now I say this, that each of you says, ‘I am of Paul,’ or ‘I am of Apollos,’ or ‘I am of Cephas’… Is Christ divided?” (1 Corinthians 1:12–13)

Denominations should never replace loyalty to Christ and His Word. The question is not merely what denomination you belong to but whether your faith aligns with sound doctrine:

“Hold fast the pattern of sound words which you have heard from me, in faith and love which are in Christ Jesus.” (2 Timothy 1:13)

Ultimately, if your church faithfully teaches the Bible, rightly divides the Word, and honors Christ above all, that is more important than the name on the sign. Your spiritual identity is found in Christ, not in man-made divisions.
