To be ain/”>born again means to experience a spiritual rebirth through faith in Jesus Christ. It is not a physical or emotional experience, but a supernatural transformation where God gives new life to a person who believes the gospel. Jesus declared the necessity of this new birth:
“Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” (John 3:3)
This spiritual birth is the work of the Holy Spirit:
“That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.” (John 3:6)
It is not accomplished by human effort or religious works, but by God’s power and grace:
“But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.” (John 1:12–13)
To be born again is to be made alive from spiritual death:
“Even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved).” (Ephesians 2:5)
This new birth brings a new nature, a new heart, and a new direction in life. Paul describes this change:
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” (2 Corinthians 5:17)
Being born again results in a changed relationship with God, from wrath to peace:
“Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Romans 5:1)
This new birth is permanent and cannot be undone. It marks the beginning of the believer’s walk with Christ and the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit:
“Having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise.” (Ephesians 1:13)
To be born again is to receive eternal life, not just in the future, but starting now:
“He who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.” (John 5:24)
Being born again is essential. Without it, there is no salvation. With it, there is new life, eternal hope, and the assurance of being a child of God.
