Why is Jesus called the second Adam?

Jesus is called the second Adam because He came to undo the damage caused by the first Adam. While the first Adam brought sin, death, and condemnation into the world through disobedience, Jesus (through perfect obedience), brought righteousness, life, and justification. He represents a new beginning for humanity under grace.

Paul draws this parallel in 1 Corinthians:

“For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive.”
(1 Corinthians 15:22)

Adam was the federal head of the human race. His sin affected all his descendants. Jesus, as the second Adam, becomes the head of a new creation. Through Him, believers are born again and receive eternal life.

Paul elaborates further:

“The first man Adam became a living being. The last Adam became a life-giving spirit.”
(1 Corinthians 15:45)

Adam was formed from the earth and brought physical life. Jesus came from heaven and gives spiritual life. Their actions had universal consequences, Adam’s for condemnation, Christ’s for salvation.

In Romans, Paul explains:

“Therefore, as through one man’s offense judgment came to all men, resulting in condemnation, even so through one Man’s righteous act the free gift came to all men, resulting in justification of life.”
(Romans 5:18)

The contrast is clear: one man brought ruin, the other redemption. Jesus succeeded where Adam failed. He was tempted yet without sin. He obeyed the Father perfectly, even unto death, securing life for all who believe.

Jesus is called the second Adam not simply because He came after, but because He established a new order: righteousness by faith, not by law or lineage.
